I’m a huge music fan, and with three
kiddos in the house while I’m trying to write, I’ve learned that headphones are
my friend. I actually have a very diverse taste in music, and I tend to pick
music to write to based on where I’m at in the story.
If it’s sensual scene I might have an
instrumental version of Alicia Key’s “Fallen” in my ears while I try to shape
the scene on the page. If I’m writing a backyard barbecue scene in the middle
of small town Texas, it might be Brooks & Dunn’s “Red Dirt Road,” or Toby
Keith’s “Beer Run.” Whatever I choose, I like to keep track of it and then
share it with the readers when I’m done, because most of the time it correlates
perfectly to the story.
When I created The Surrender Trilogy, I
used music to help me tell the story. Drawing on the emotions of the singer,
and the lyrics I selected each song to represent specific scene or character,
and then I compiled them all into one playlist. Check it out!
